Remembering 2007 sofa fire
Moultrie News. June 18, 2026.
In observance of the tragic Sofa Super Store fire that saw nine firefighters perish inside of a burning building, the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce recently commemorated the memory of its victims.
On hand at the Chamber's June 18 luncheon were Mount Pleasant Fire Chief Mike Mixon Jr. and Charleston Fire Chief Dan Curia. Mixon addressed the crowd by sharing the impact the tragedy had on him and many of his colleagues.
"The fire changed the culture of fire service not only locally or within the state of South Carolina; it changed the fire service nationally," said Mixon. "And this really changed the course of my career, especially now that I'm fire chief. It frames the perspective of what's really important."
The blaze resulted from a small trash fire that grew into a colossal inferno, trapping the firefighters in the building before the roof collapsed.
