MP welcomes Lighthouse Family Chiropractic

Mount Pleasant's newly-opened pediatric and prenatal chiropractic office at 999 Lake Hunter Circle isn't your typical neck and back adjustment venue in that the focus is squarely on monitoring and enhancing the nervous system of its mother-and-child clientele.

Chiropractors Dr. Olivia Porpora and Dr. Devin Decenzo of Lighthouse Family Chiropractic were on hand to describe their health-based offerings during a Sept. 17 ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Town staffers and Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce reps.

Pregnant mothers treated at the facility undergo a non-invasive CLA Insight scan, according to Porpora, to assess the functionality of an individual's nervous system deemed "perfectly safe" for even the tiniest of babies.

When those scans are ready for view — after a patient's second visit — said Decenzo, mothers will typically remark that what they see is exactly how they envisioned their symptoms looking like.
"Neurology doesn't lie," observed Decenzo. "It's always related to that root cause of what's going on. And when they come into the office, we've noticed that if they come in with sleep issues, they'll notice improvements in digestion [and] energy. It's all because the nervous system is this massive control center of the whole body."

Once the baby is delivered, Porpora and Decenzo will start seeing babies as early as the day they're born, as there's no better time to get adjusted, they noted, than right after birth.

The process of giving birth can be stressful both to the mother and the newborn, per the local chiropractors, with lots of pressure being applied to the baby's neck, spinal cord and brain. Early adjustments can help clear up any interference issues related to that pressure, they added.

"The adjustments look quite different than they would for adults," said Porpora. "We use the same pressure you'd use to test the ripeness of an avocado ... so it's very gentle, very specific."

As for post-birth symptoms moms should be cognizant of in their children, Decenzo mentioned colic, reflux and constipation as conditions that should prompt them to schedule a visit.

While some may downplay those tell-tale indicators, many kids don't grow out of their struggles, and sometimes develop new ones with the nervous system in a state of stress.

"A big group we see here as well are kids with sensory processing [issues]. So, kids with ADHD and other neurological disorders ... these are the same kids with colic, reflux and constipation [...]," maintained Decenzo.

In terms of conditions that mothers are saddled with during and after pregnancy, both doctors pointed to stress, anxiety and sleep struggles that emerge in their adult female patients, with residual aches and pains.

When asked what went into selecting Mount Pleasant for their business location, Porpora stated how she and her colleague identified the community as a place where kids are struggling. In addition, Mount Pleasant has also been identified as a town where parents are seeking natural holistic methods to get past surgeries and medications.

"We've seen how we can make this huge impact and change generations of health — and that's what we wanted to do here," she concluded.
