Description
Be the Change Charleston is a non-profit dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities through community connection and employment opportunities. Be the Change Charleston was created after public educators, Shaina Bermudez and Halie Tumbleston witnessed the need for quality, individualized, and affirming post secondary support for high school students with disabilities due to a majority of services ending at the age of 21.
Be the Change Charleston provides an Empowerment Through Employment (ETE) program where ETE Coaches support adults with disabilities with their self identified goals in job readiness, employment skills, and independent living skills. ETE focuses on empowering individuals with disabilities by following their lead and equipping them with the tools they need to be successful in their employment journeys. Be the Change Charleston also provides free resources: a website disability resources guide and inclusive event calendar, as well as community events where the focus is on creating a more inclusive community for all!
Halie, BCBA & M.S. Curriculum & Instruction, started her career as a special education teacher for high school students with moderate to severe disabilities. She expanded her career in applied behavior analysis (ABA) while co-founding Be the Change Charleston. She is currently working to affirm neurodiverse practice as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). In her free time, she enjoys drinking coffee at her favorite spots, thrifting, and spending her time with her husband, friends, family & their 2 frenchies Jack Black and Poppy and their 2 cats, Jamungii & Petri.
